It was a great chat and I wanted to see the guys play live to see if my opinion could be swayed, maybe they sound better live!? Maybe the radio stuff is shit compared to their other songs!? Either way I took one for the team and went along to their 2015 Australian Tour in Brisbane (for free of course, there was no way I was giving them any of my money) and the end result is as follows…Īpologies for the single posts, this was done in a time before twitter threads existed He made a valid point and we had a good laugh about it all at his expense, and, he took it like a champ, whilst once again giving it straight back to us. Now during an interview I did with the Paddle Pop Lion himself, Chad, he played up his band’s criticism and blamed radio stations and presenters for giving them the airplay which resulted in their popularity. ‘ Photograph‘, ‘ Rockstar‘, ‘ Never Gonna Be Alone‘, ‘ Someday‘ etc) which all, to me, sounded the same. I'm not crapping on Nickelback or anyone who enjoys them, I just don't feel like this is a metal song.Over time I formed an opinion on the band which still stands to this day: they’re not very good musicians as a lot of their songs were replicas of each other and their most popular radio releases (e.g.

Very much grunge influenced, more experimentation, and fairly heavy at times. If interested I'd go back in time and listen to some of their albums before they got noticed at all. Nickelback has actually had A LOT of songs heavier than this in their back catalog. The definition of heavy metal has constantly evolved, bands like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith were considered 'metal' in the 70's, but by today's standards that comparison probably wouldn't fly. I'd liken this to something like Breaking Benjamin, it's just a heavy rock song. Nickelback has always had amazing sounding heavy guitars on their songs, comes with money I guess. Sure, it has pretty heavily distorted guitars, but that is about it. Its pretty slow, pretty straight forward composition to flow right into that mainstream rock radio sound. My point being is, I just don't see anything that would make this a metal song. It's not really about comparing band to band, it's more that new metallica albums are usually labeled "not metal enough" by the metal crowd, but you'll find them played right next to nickleback on modern rock radio.
